四川西昌人，1973年生。1996年复旦大学材料科学系材料物理专业本科毕业，同年赴美国康奈尔大学材料科学与工程系攻读博士。1999年半路出家，放弃康奈尔学业并转到匹兹堡大学，先后获科学史与科学哲学系硕士（2002年）和哲学系博士（2010年）。2004年和2005年曾在德国波茨坦大学哲学系访问。
2011年春季学期在美国阿克隆大学哲学系任资深讲师，2011年秋季学期起在武汉大学哲学院任副教授，2014年夏季学期起在中山大学哲学系任教授，2018年春季学期起在清华大学哲学系任长聘教授。
主要研究方向为：维特根斯坦，语言哲学，心灵哲学，行动哲学。此外对西方现代哲学（从笛卡尔到康德）和伦理学有兴趣。
